Conferences

Happy Halloween!! As I sit here watching the leaves pile up on my yard and hearing the acorns pound onto the roof (I think it might be dangerous to trick or treat today) I'm thinking about next week. I know it's the weekend and I should just be focusing on the here and now but after seven years as a teacher I learned that in this profession where you are constantly planning ahead, it's impossible not to think of next week.

My students are excited and apprehensive for their Student Led conferences with their parents next week. Many of them are excited and I think that some are even a little nervous. I know that many kids talk to their parents about school but how often do you sit one on one with your children and have them give you detailed examples of how they are progressing in school, what their successes are, and what their struggles are in each class? Yesterday the students worked on their scripts and we talked about how to greet their parents when they come to the conference. The kids thought it was hysterical that they will be shaking their parent's hands when they come and offering them a seat and a snack. :)

I have a feeling that they are going to really enjoy the conferences and I hope that the parents also enjoy them. This is an opportunity for the kids to show their parents how they are growing and maturing as 8th grade students!

  1. Danielle,

I think we should really try to get some feedback from both your students and their parents after the conferences are over. I'd love to be able to provide that to the students so they could see what their parents thought of the process, and the same would be true for the parents.

    What do you think?

  2. Thanks Pat - Actually the last minute of the conference the students will have their parents fill out a Parent evaluation sheet and then the kids will fill out a self evaluation sheet and hand them to me right after the conference. The parents are also going to be given "homework" where we ask them to write a short note to their child letting them know what they liked about the conference and what they were proud of - so we'll see how it goes!! I'll let you know! By the way - I was able to use google docs for scheduling and it wasn't perfect but worked out better than any other way!
